Supported internships

For people aged 16 to 24 with a statement of Special Educational Needs (SEN), or an Education, Health and Care plan, a supported internship can be a fantastic option to gain sustainable paid employment by supporting you with a personalised study programme and work experience with an employer.

What is a supported internship?

A supported internship is a workplace based programme for 16 to 24 year olds with a statement of SEN or an Education, Health and Care Plan to equip you with the skills you need to reach employment.

How do they work?

Supported internships take place in a workplace environment where the young person will have been matched to a suitable job and employer. There you are assigned a work coach who will support you in learning all the skills you need to succeed in the workplace. You will complete a personalised study programme which provides the opportunity to gain relevant qualifications, as well as English and Maths if needed.

How long do they last?

They can last between 6 months to a year.

What qualifications do I need?

There are no required qualifications, however you must be between 16 and 24 with a statement of SEN or an Education, Health and Care Plan to apply for a supported internship.

What about fees and wages?

While supported internships are unpaid, they are also free so you do not need to pay any fees.
